To quote a popular song..... "Isn't it ironic".....
Less than 48 hours after I post my opinion on the HCR law that just went into effect - my family is suffering a serious health care crisis and we have no health insurance. Are the Fates smacking me around for my opinion? Maybe ... only time will tell. But because of it's timing I have chosen to document our families experience so that many of you can get a first-hand account - in real time while it's happening - on what trying to survive without health insurance is like.
For those of you who may not have heard already - my husband was flown by helicopter to Dartmouth Hospital this afternoon after suffering another heart attack. He is going to undergo heart bypass surgery. At this point we do not know if the surgery will take place tomorrow morning or Monday morning. Lab results are necessary first before the surgical team can make the call.
Considering my recent rant against the new Health Reform Law - and the fact that we have no Health Insurance - this is going to be an interesting situation to watch develop.
You might want to stay aware to see how it all plays out.
First thing I will tell everyone though.
The wonderful folks at both hospitals in Littleton NH and Dartmouth never even pretended they would not treat my husband - they were very courteous, very caring and compassionate and rushed him in for treatment immediately. Nobody checked through my wallet for an Insurance card and nobody hassled me about not having insurance.
It was all "we will deal with that when we have to" ..... at this point the hospital in Littleton gave us an application to try for assistance available through the hospital. I have not gone through it yet - but will update you on what it involves when I have time.
For the time being I am focused on getting my husband well and getting him home. But the bills are going to be extraordinary and our financial future may very well be over - and all that we've worked for gone.
And at this point? I am still against the current health reform law ... I consider it unfair and do not believe it would have helped us enough for what pain it would inflict upon others. But keep in mind one very important fact ... I don't want others to suffer for my gain. And yes - if I had to file bankruptcy and not pay these bills - society would suffer from that fact as well. It's part of what drives up the cost for everyone on health care - I understand that. So it all comes down to which of the two evils is less? .... stay tuned, I think I may just be in a position to find out soon.
My thoughts and prayers and energy at this point forward though are focused on my husband and my family ... I am only sharing the rest with everyone else so we may all have a "real world" example of what dealing with the health care industry with no insurance and no real cash available in savings to offer support is truly like.
