Our Health Crisis - Update 3/29/2010

My husband went in for surgery on 3/26/2010.  They ended up having to do an emergency quadruple-bypass.  He is only 45 years old and not overweight (6'4" and under 200 lbs).  The primary culprits for the condition of his heart are believed to be a combination of smoking (he has been a non-smoker for a while now - since his first heart issue back in 2004) and a diet that included Trans Fats (from back in the day when we didn't know how dangerous they were).

The surgery lasted several hours though not nearly as long as it could have.  All went well.  He was in CVCC (Cardiovascular Critical Care) throughout the weekend and finally moved out of that area on March 28th.  There are no words to describe how great all the people at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center are, but I will always hold a special level of reverence for those in the CVCC unit and the surgeons.  What an amazing hospital.  All hospitals should be at least as good as DHMC.  They are simply a beacon others should follow.

If you or anyone you know has dealt with a hospital that refuses people treatment or has allowed people to die in their emergency rooms - it is quite simply a bad hospital.  I am going to try and research in the future what we the public can do about such institutions because honestly we never encountered any hesitation to administer treatment with any of the facilities or medical professionals we dealt with.  Both Dartmouth and Littleton Regional Hospital were absolutely excellent on this issue.  No hesitation, no delay - nothing - just immediate, emergency care.  All either facility was focused on was the care of my husband - everything else was considered minor.

On the Financial front:  The Financial Services division of DHMC is no less as great as their medical staff.  Once again - no hassling and no arrogance.  Nobody there even attempted to make me feel badly for our financial situation and we just sat down together very matter-of-factly and went over the situation.

Because we had only lost our benefits recently, January of 2010 - we decided to try and pursue getting COBRA reinstated to which it appears today will be successful.  The insurance he did have was not great - but it will at least be a starting point.

I will update more as we move forward.  At this point it looks as though we may be able to have my husband home on Wednesday - but that of course may change depending upon all the circumstances that must be considered.
