New York City's Central Park

In the autumn of 2008 my daughter was attending classes in New York City so every week we jumped in the Jeep and headed to one of my dearest friends that lived in the City. We would spend the night at her house and after escorting my daughter to class VERY early in the morning, my friend and I would spend the day exploring the city.

These trips were my first foray into the Great City and I was absolutely stunned. I immediately fell in love with NYC - it was the first place I ever visited that actually made me feel as though I had always lived there. Although it was my first visit it truly felt as though the community and it's people were saying to me "Welcome Home". I suppose everybody belongs to this City - and I am sure that I am not the first to feel as though I finally found a place where I "fit in".

One of my favorite spots, of course - esp. as a "newbie", was Central Park. We spent one whole morning in just a very small section of the park. We entered near the Zoo and worked our way back to The Lake. These are some of my photos from that day. Everything from the nature to the artwork in the park held me spellbound. The architecture made me feel as though I was wandering through another world - again, one I was welcomed in. The whole design seemed to be made to make me feel as though I was simply on a country stroll somewhere not in a city. But the city of course refused to be ignored. Glimpses of her skyscrapers can still be seen through the tree tops and her noise invades your senses throwing your perception of the country stroll off. But it's not invasive - it just feels as though it's one more dimension to the personality of this wonderful city.

Please be sure to spend some time in Central Park when/if you visit the city. It would especially be a good visit to make when you start to feel a little overwhelmed by the crowds, traffic or noise. It's the small break some of us "small town" or "country" folk need when we are in the city. The much needed opportunity to reconnect with nature and to help us remember that this world is not just about what man can accomplish - nature is a part of us as well and she can even survive in the midst of one of the greatest collections of mankind on the face of the earth.

While reading this speech, the following portion stood out to me like a flashing red beacon:

"In these sentiments, sir, I agree to this Constitution with all its faults—if they are such—because I think a general government necessary for us, and there is no form of government but what may be a blessing to the people if well administered; and I believe, further, that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic government, being incapable of any other."

I have to sit and wonder, slightly surprised by my own fears - have we honestly become the society that Franklin claimed would be the only way to destroy the Constitution? I must admit that for many of us in our current society - by our apathy, our selfishness, our desire to be popular with extreme opinions - we may have, or perhaps we are just on our way there. Now is the time to put a stop to it - this is not a "political party" rant - I don't care what party qualified, honorable, and fair minded leaders come from - only that they do come forward and once again begin to truly "represent" the people of this Country.

"Dangers of a Salaried Bureaucracy"

For those who oppose Term Limits for our politicians, how do you feel about not paying them a salary? How long do you think they would remain in office under those circumstances? I fear Benjamin Franklin's concerns regarding a "salaried bureaucracy" have come to be. Please read by clicking the above link when you have the time.

Some of my favorite (or most feared) excerpts:

Sir, there are two passions which have a powerful influence in the affairs of men. These are ambition and avarice—the love of power and the love of money. Separately, each of these has great force in prompting men to action; but, when united in view of the same object, they have, in many minds, the most violent effects. Place before the eyes of such men a post of honor, that shall, at the same time, be a place of profit, and they will move heaven and earth to obtain it."

and yet another warning that seems to have come to be - after all, how many times does Congress sneak in a "pay raise" for themselves and you only really learn of it "after the fact":

"Besides these evils, sir, tho we may set out in the beginning with moderate salaries, we shall find that such will not be of long continuance. Reasons will never be wanting for proposed augmentations; and there will always be a party for giving more to the rulers, that the rulers may be able, in return, to give more to them. Hence, as all history informs us, there has been in every state and kingdom a constant kind of warfare between the governing and the governed; the one striving to obtain more for its support, and the other to pay less. And this has alone occasioned great convulsions, actual civil wars, ending either in dethroning of the princes or enslaving of the people."

And just one more excerpt - this one goes to the "Content of Character" the salaried bureaucrat will attract to fill the post:

"And of what kind are the men that will strive for this profitable preeminence, through all the bustle of cabal, the heat of contention, the infinite mutual abuse of parties, tearing to pieces the best of characters? It will not be the wise and moderate, the lovers of peace and good order, the men fittest for the trust. It will be the bold and the violent, the men of strong passions and indefatigable activity in their selfish pursuits. These will thrust themselves into your government and be your rulers. And these, too, will be mistaken in the expected happiness of their situation, for their vanquished competitors, of the same spirit, and from the same motives, will perpetually be endeavoring to distress their administration, thwart their measures, and render them odious to the people."

...do we honestly still wonder why our politicians (any party) always seem to lie to us? To not be who we thought they were when we elected them? How can we honestly be shocked when we have been warned for years - when we also know people like this who will abuse the post of power/profit to claim their "class" among society? It should be no surprise to anyone that the character of our political leaders is lacking that which we would demand in even a mild acquaintance. I trust almost any stranger so much further than I would any political leader in these modern times.

We must find a way to limit their power & influence. No one individual should be able to obtain such a lifetime of power - no matter how many "goodies" they bring home for the "people". Either limit the amount of time they spend in leadership - or take away the profit of a lifetime given over to it. One or the other - they can not remain to have both or we have given over ourselves to the "ruling class" and we might as well be a modernized version of a monarchy.

FOLLOW UP: Below is my response to a statement I received arguing against term limits and pointing out that Franklin was referring primarily to the Executive Level of Government. This is from my Facebook page.

I realize that Franklin was referring primarily to the Executive level of the Government - but when Congress allows the government to become more "bureaucratic" every day - and profits off that decision - they have inadvertently allowed the government of which Franklin warned to exist - this is the issue I have with "CZARS" - under any administration. Congress is no longer doing it's job and yet the members still profit from their position. They either need to do their job or step down to let others do so. The time of passing the buck of responsibility to a non-elected bureaucrat is over, esp. when you reap the rewards of that decision and none of the penalties.

I see no avoidance of influence from the power-hungry activists with our current system. I see no benefit that is actually being realized after this many years of existence from a government without term limits on all elected offices. I only see people (from both parties) who have learned the loopholes and gray areas of government to exploit. With a term of a Senator being 6 years - add a 2 or 3 term limit to that - and 12 to 18 years is sufficient time to learn the legislative process and become "experienced" without a lifetime of profit being necessary.

"duh" ... anyone who knows anybody that deals with Public Aide based health coverage now already knows most doctors who accept the program aren't accepting "new" patients - or you have to drive a dozen hours to find one who will. It's always been a mess and I don't anticipate it being any better now that EVERYONE will be in on it. What a disaster we are facing...

New Hampshire Historic Marker detailing the history of "Boom Piers" on the Androscoggin River.

Text on sign reads: "The small man-made "islands" in the river were used to secure a chain of boom logs which divided the Androscoggin River during the colorful and dramatic annual log drives, when the Brown Paper Co. and the International Paper Co. shared the river to float their logs from the forests far upriver to the mills at Berlin. The logs were stamped on the ends with a marking hammer to identify their ownership, and they were sorted at a "sorting gap" further upriver. The log drives ended in 1963. The old piers continue to serve as a reminder of North Country heritage."

According to the article the President said this way back in September:

“For us to say that you’ve got to take a responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase,” the president said last September, in a spirited exchange with George Stephanopoulos on the ABC News program “This Week.”

When Mr. Stephanopoulos said the penalty appeared to fit the dictionary definition of a tax, Mr. Obama replied, “I absolutely reject that notion.”

and yet in court his administration says:

"In a brief defending the law, the Justice Department says the requirement for people to carry insurance or pay the penalty is “a valid exercise” of Congress’s power to impose taxes."

I don't think you can trust any politician to tell the truth these days....

When we lived in Central Florida we were very close to all the attractions, including Disney and the Downtown Disney Marketplace. On days that our family had nothing better to do we would often just go to this location, grab some frozen lemonade and "people watch" or "critter watch". The area was often full of wildlife - as these photos of the Anhingas show. Big beautiful birds - also called a "snakebird" because of their long necks.
